The cops eventually discovered that Zeus was shot by his owner, 23-year-old Kevin James Fishburn. Kevin not only inflicted severe injuries on his dog, but also removed his collar and ID before leaving him to die in the woods. Kevin claimed that he shot an “aggressive” Zeus in self-defense. However, the same was proved to be untrue as Zeus was extremely gentle and affectionate with everyone he met.

Kevin was arrested on a fifth-degree felony charge of cruelty to companion animals. Based on concrete evidence and the lack of believability of Kevin’s version of events, the jury found him guilty. Judge Frank Forchione called his crime a “cowardly and inhumane act”, and sentenced him to a maximum of 12 months in prison.
