For Tunica Humane Society, “Operation: Delta Dogs” will always be one of the most physically and mentally agonizing rescue missions ever. The operation began when the shelter received a call from a passerby about a “large number of dogs” rotting away in an abandoned home in the rural outskirts of Coahoma County, Mississippi writes ilovemydogsomuch.tv

When the rescuers arrived at the enclosed property, they were shaken to see several skeletal dogs roaming anxiously in the yard, and a few others holed up in shabby corners of the dilapidated house. It was clear they had had no food or water for weeks. While the starving dogs devoured the food they received from the rescuers, they were too terrified to follow a bunch of strangers out of the blue.

After assessing the damaged mental state of these dogs, the rescuers thought it would be prudent to win their trust before rescue. Over the next 10 days and nights, they made multiple trips to the house to feed the dogs and induce familiarity. One by one, the dogs lost their fears and allowed the rescuers to take them away – until all 19 of them were rescued!

The journey after the rescue was equally haunting for everyone as these abused dogs didn’t have the spark to face the world again. But with supportive love, care and therapy, the rescuers managed to re-home every dog within a year! Today, “Operation: Delta Dogs” is a source of pride and hope for rescuers, and it motivates them to keep striving harder for unfortunate dogs.
