Since the man was unable to keep the dog, now named Halo, Diane Avery, of Anthony, New Mexico, agreed to take her in.

Avery assumed that Halo had been hit by a car at some point, but when she took her to the vet, x-rays revealed that she had a pellet lodged in her back.

Someone had shot her with a pellet gone and left her paralyzed in the desert to die.

In addition to being unable to walk, she was also very malnourished and dehydrated.

The three-month old Husky/Lab mix had a successful spinal surgery to dislodge the pellet, in the hopes that she will be able to walk again.

The surgeons said that the pellet had not severed the spinal cord, but put pressure on it as it traveled through the tissue and came to rest.

As she begins to heal, she will start physical therapy to help her regain her strength in her hind legs.

“Someone said to me that Halo was lucky to have us but we feel we are lucky to have her in our lives!” Avery wrote on Facebook. “What a beautiful spirit in the face of great difficulty. We can all learn from this little throw away puppy!”
