She Was Shot Then Hit By A Car, But She Still Never Stops Wagging Her Tail

Animal Control brought a dog in to the Pender County Animal Shelter in Burgaw, North Carolina, as a stray. She was in awful condition yet was still the sweetest dog you’ll ever meet. It turns out that her owner was on the run from the law and hadn’t taken care of her for a long time. She has been through so much in her short life, including being shot at some point, as well as having been hit by a car several weeks ago, writes ilovemydogsomuch

She was rushed into surgery, where veterinarians spent hours amputation her leg. In addition to her injuries, she is also malnourished and infested with parasites. Despite everything she has gone through, she is always wagging her tail and a smile has always remained on her face. Because of her positive attitude and sweet demeanor, they decided to name her “Smiley.”

It’s unknown whether her owner who is “on the run from the law” is her most recent owner or if she belonged to someone else after him, but she already has a place to stay at a wonderful rescue once she is fully recovered. When she is healed, she will be available for adoption. Staff hopes that she finds a loving family who will treat her the way she deserves. She is estimated to be between eight and ten years old.

Smiley has been in rough shape for a long time and Jewell Horton, the shelter’s manager, hopes her story will encourage neighbors to call the shelter immediately if they see an animal in distress.

“That’s a long time to hurt,” Horton told WECT News. “If you see something, say something. We have to be their voice.”

The shelter is now raising money for Smiley’s medical care. Donation checks can be mailed to the shelter at 3280 New Savannah Rd, Burgaw, NC 28425, and are also accepted over the phone at 910-259-1484.
