The three-month-old Chihuahua named Chewy was found injured and alone inside the Las Vegas airport bathroom during the weekend. Although pet abandonment can be seen as a typical cruelty act, this situation was far from that … This was a gesture of love and despair!

Chewy was found with a handwritten note from her owner, describing how they had escaped together from mistreatment. This was an escape which forced them to separate.

Along with Chewy there was a handwritten note from his owner, describing how they had fled from ill-treatment together – a desperate escape that, awkwardly, eventually forced them to separate

“Hi! I’m Chewy!” My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart but she has no other option – My ex boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy sooo much! Please love and take care of him. xoxoxoxo”

Luckily Chewy did not spend much time alone. A good Samaritan took her to Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue, where President and Founder Linda Gilliam received her story with all her heart.

“My heart fell to my knees,” Gilliam said. “I did not hesitate to accept it and instructed my adopter to immediately take it to the ER.”

And with that, Chewy was on the road to recovery and a better life.

No one knows the whereabouts of the woman who was forced to separate from Chewy, but Gilliam hopes that by sharing this story, other people with pets in abusive situations can be helped. The shelters, knowing what is going on, help people, staying with the animals until the reunion is possible. The important thing is that owners and animals stay together!

“This is a very neglected issue as a whole,” Gilliam said. “We also want to get the message to Chewy’s mother that she’s done something brave and that he’s safe and will have a great life.”

If you know someone in an abusive relationship, with or without pets, do not be quiet. Contact the victim support lines of domestic violence. No one deserves to live a life of fear!
